Christine D. Townsend (“Dr. Chris”) is a professor in the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications at Texas A&M University. “Dr. Chris” began her leadership education career by restructuring a survey course, Professional Leadership Development, to accommodate large sections of students while maintaining an atmosphere of application for each student. She has also taught other leadership courses including “Team Learning,” “Learning Organizations,” “Youth Leadership,” “Senior Seminar,” and several “Workshop” classes. Townsend has been recognized for outstanding teaching with several awards including 2 terms as University Professor for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence, the national USDA Southern Region Award for Excellence in Teaching, University and College level Achievement Awards for Teaching, Center for Teaching Excellence Scholar Award, the Honors Program Teacher/Scholar Award, and the national Association of Leadership Educators Distinguished Leadership Educator award.
Townsend served as department head for 3 years. Prior to her position as Department Head, she was an undergraduate advisor for the Agricultural Leadership and Development major. She advised approximately 1/3 of the 1,000 students participating in the major.
Chris Townsend has chaired over 100 graduate student committees. These students have completed their research under Townsend’s direction and have contributed to her primary inquiry investigating effective leadership education programs for youth, collegiate students, and adults. She has presented over 400 invited leadership education seminars and programs throughout the United States.
Christine Townsend received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Ohio State University and her Ph.D. from Iowa State University.
